烟花三月的扬州城久负盛名，“红园·仙次元”文旅潮流街区也于2022年的春天展露新貌。“红园·仙次元”毗邻瘦西湖、东关街、古运河等扬州城区顶级商旅文脉，由镌刻着“老扬州”记忆的红园花鸟鱼虫市场改造更新而来；“仙”即对。

Long known to every schoolchild as celebrated in poetry since Tang Dynasty for its flowery affluence at the hub of the Grand Canal, Yangzhou is now shaping another trendy district of cultural tourism since the spring of 2022, named “Hongyuan the Xian City”. Situated adjacent to the Slender West Lake, the East Gateway Street, the Old Grand Canal and other top-level cultural-tourist contexts, the district comes into being from renovating the Red Garden Markets for Pets redolent of old Yangzhouers’ memories.

木又寸建筑事物室AtelierTree受委托设计红园·仙次元HUB创新中心外部立面，建筑坐落于仙次元北区。南临仙次元西入口内主要通道，西侧与园区外围建筑体形成小尺度街道，北接艺术酒店客房，东侧沿仙次元中心广场展开。这一处集合了商业店铺、演艺中心、艺术展示、共享办公、娱乐休闲等多种业态的策展式小型综合体，渐次演化为北区商业、公共活动的核心场域。

The AtelierTree is commissioned toredesign the facade of the HUB Innovation Center that lies in the northern district. To the south it faces the main passage via the west entrance, to the west it forms a small-scale street with the peripheral buildings, on the north it’s adjoined by the rooms of the art hotel, and in the east it unfolds along the central square. A small curating complex integrating commercial stores, performing arts center, art exhibition, shared office, entertainment and leisure, etc., so as to evolve into the core of both commerce and public activities in the northern district.

HUB创新中心建筑平面接近等边矩形，层层黛瓦覆盖的坡屋面下，是现状保留的框架混凝土结构梁柱，主体二层、局部三层。园区传统建筑的风貌在改造中不可滅失，坡屋面与主体山墙不可改动，随更迭的功能需求而做的建筑身体上的立面操作，是建筑与街道空间，在分离与交融的界面上的表情转化手术，借以实现建筑身份的更迭，将在老城记忆与青年能量，平衡与对话中谋求新声。

Covering a nearly square plan under stepped sloped eaves of dark tiles, the HUB Innovation Center stands as a concrete framework that accommodates two floors with partially an extra third one. As the traditionally rendered ensemble of the block shall continue and the sloped roofs and gable walls remain intact, the very operation on the facade for functional conversion proves to be a surgery of expression in the interface of the building and the street, at the transition between separation and merging. In this way, the building may have a new identity voiced though balancing the old memories and the vibrant youth subculture in a dialogue.

盆景之意象
The imagery of bonsai

扬州园林凭借独树一帜的风格，在中国园林史中负有盛名，在江南园林中占有重要一席，《扬州画舫录》致有“杭州以湖山胜，苏州以市肆胜，扬州以园亭胜，三者鼎峙，不分轩轾”的评述。盆景，在钱学森先生看来，是一种微型园林，是赏园层次中的最小园林空间尺度。杨派盆景，以一寸三弯的剪扎技艺与独特造型闻名，在盆钵之中再现妙趣横生的自然景观。

In the art of gardening, Yangzhou had developed a school of its own, whose position in Chinese gardening history and magnetism in its South-of-Yangtze-River region had won highly acclaims from the record “Yangzhou Huafang Lu”(literally “Records from A Decorated Pleasure Boat in Yangzhou”) that “While Hangzhou takes pride in its lakes and hills and Suzhou in its streets and store, Yangzhou in its gardens and pavilions with no less charm”. Right in this sense Prof. Qian Xuesen rediscovered bonzai as a mini-garden that represented the micro-level in appreciating the art of gardening. The bonsai of Yangzhou style is well known for a unique plastics through cutting and binding skills that represent the wildly subtle Nature within the inches of a container.

HUB立面改造设计的灵感来自盆景艺术的创作过程，取其小中见大、包融时空的艺术特征。整个建筑被意象为一座高低起伏的几何山峦，坡屋面下，金属模块构件在多个立面上起伏连绵，试图营造出石上清泉跌瀑，松间明月青光的诗意构架，原始建筑固有的方整体量，又将延展的画卷统筹为一立体之物，仿佛高山深谷重林叠翠尽在一盆钵之间。

And it is right from the making of the bonsai art that the renovation of the HUB facade finds its inspiration, for the very magic of unveiling the big through the small and folding all dimensions into one microcosms. The whole building is dressed up into an undulated rockery of geometry, where under the sloped roofs, the metallic modular units continue dynamically in all facades as if the waterfalls against the cropped rocks and the moonshine amid the pine woods as portrayed rhythmically in the poetry. As the scroll in-depth wraps around a cube, it’s naturally perceived as a miniature of mountains and ravines, all shades of greenness.

历史幽光中的金属之声
The metallic echoes upon historic patina

HUB创新中心新的外墙主要有基础围护层和遮阳层两部分。铝合金玻璃门窗和窗间墙是基础层面，梁柱与梁柱之间的墙体外部以烟黑色涂料和黑色木纹水泥板饰面，作为南方园林建筑的外部墙体，区别于江南传统黛瓦下的白墙，黑色使建筑立面消隐进时光，指向深厚悠长，气韵内敛的烟火传承；在其之外，银灰色金属遮阳系统脱开墙体独立构建，拉丝不锈钢板预制而成的矩形模块，连续垒叠包覆住HUB中心外立面的主要部分，金属板倒映着周遭景象模糊的光影，黑色基底与金属遮阳层叠合为完整的建筑外部立面，深邃黑色基底上闪烁着科技潮流生活愿景的能量气息。改造设计将传统建筑三段式特征做出演化：凸出的银色金属遮阳构件可被看作台基，亦延伸至立面高处，在烟黑色墙体前部形成起伏的不规则轮廓边线，模糊了台基和墙身的分界。建筑新的复合皮肤，与覆盖其上的原始坡屋面形成对照。

A brise-soleil plus the basic envelope makes up the new facade for the HUB Innovation Center; the former comprised of aluminum alloy windows, doors and piers, the latter featuring a frame-infill of sooty black paint and dark wood-grained cement plates setback by certain distance. Therefore, at first sight it is the darkness that engenders a reclusive depth into the past, suggesting a reserved, after-tasteful continuity of the traditional gardens by replacing their white walls. Soon one will perceive a more cyberpunk reflection and a more geek feel, namely on the silvery gray prefabricated units of the brushed stainless steel sheets that comprise the freestanding brise-soleil wrapping the whole building, and against the profound darkness as if a black satin. If only taking the whole into account, one will see the traditional vertical ternary facade is now reinterpreted into a composite skin: the protruding silvery brise-soleil could be beheld as a lightweight platform growing upward until under the eaves, so blurring the hierarchy while contrasting the horizontality with an undulating crystallinity.

黛瓦下的模块百宝阁

建筑立面外层金属构架的作用不是单一的。口字形不锈钢板模块安装于钢龙骨骨架之外，金属构架横肋与竖肋400mm的进深，使其能在水平与垂直两个方向上承担遮阳功能。模块拓展了建筑表皮的深度，形成建筑外立面上新的金属博古架，构建出大约两百个陈列展示格子。盆景、雕塑、文玩、当代IP公仔、装置，皆可安置一隅，在金属模块的整合之下，传统与当代的艺术、文化产品可在融合与碰撞中灼灼生辉。新的建筑表皮使HUB中心在建筑立面上开拓出了陈列展示百宝阁的功能，也使建筑围护结构从隔绝的界面，转化为融向街道空间的“场所”。

The outer freestanding metallic framework plays actually more than one roles. On the one hand, a depth of 400mm in both vertical and horizontal directions of the stainless sheets installed over the steel keel ensures a full sun-shading; one the other, the modular skin also lends a displaying effect to the inside, namely serving as a metallic antique shelf of over two hundred niches for bonsai, sculpture, curiosities, IP figurines, installations and plants, making up a chorus of tradition and contemporaneity. In this way, the displaying skin turned the envelope from a boundary into a “place” fitted into the street spaces.

向赛博时空发射的电子信息矩阵
An electronic matrix sent into the cyberspace

在约两百个金属遮阳模块的覆盖下，建筑立面形成连续起伏的几何矩阵，在主要街道人视角度内的金属模块的一个侧边，嵌入安装300mm宽低分辨率竖向LED显示屏，个别金属模块被放大，填充高清全彩LED显示屏幕。金属几何模块群组转变为数字信息输出的电子矩阵。影像画面，文字、词句在矩阵间流动变化。实现建筑三维视角上的即时信息传播或是长期规律的内容输出展示。HUB创新中心新的外立面成为链接数字世界的端口，改造后的建筑成为数字信息的立体传播媒介。

And there’s still more inventiveness to the facade: right in the undulating geometric matrix embedded in some two hundred metallic brise-soleil units, a vertical series of LED screens of low resolution by a 300mm width could be installed at the human height along the main streets, with some exceptional meshes enlarged to infill high-definition full-color screens. In this way, the metallic modules of geometry are turned into an electronic matrix of information, whereupon a flux of images, words and diction continue, therefore realizing a real-time three-dimensional transmission of information as demanded by the time-tested rule for contents of the very Innovation Center. Now the new facade makes it a true port that links the digital world as a three-dimensional medium.

通往赛博世界的多功能建筑表皮
A multivalent skin leading to the cyberworld

在数字互联网与现实生活紧密连接的当下，新的生活模型被构想并逐步实践。建筑在不同建造事件中的职能，促使其在不同的场所环境呈现不同身体。HUB创新中心在传统建筑架构的主体上镶嵌组合金属与光电电子等构件元素，构建多层复合功能的建筑表皮，通过实物陈设、数字信息输出流动，使建筑外墙由边界演化为场所，故事不仅发生在建筑内部或建筑外部，也在“墙”上。除了具体的使用功能，建筑改造策略将对历史的关照和对未来的展望链接至场地，以冲突并置筑造新的价值，激发建筑、街道、城市与人的能量，联结庞大的年轻创造力群体的生活、消费方式的更多场景，指向赛博空间的无限可能。

In the very present of close coupling of digital internet and real life, a new mode of life is well conceived for gradual realization. According to its roles by different tectonic events, the building is encouraged to present various corporeal feels by the place. So the HUB Innovation Center has metallic as well as electronic elements embedded into the 900ly traditional layout, thus establishing a multivalent architectural skin enabling object display and digital flows, finally turning the wall from a boundary into a place, a place where the stories not only goes on in the inside or on the outside, but also overflow and superpose on the “walls”. Moreover, besides certain functions in details, the renovation strategy also anchors the concern for history and prospect for future into the site, creating new values by juxtaposing contradictions. With the energies invigorated in architecture, street-scape, urbanism and human life, the tremendous gravitation of the youth groups in both creativity and consuming may bring forth more scenes that lead to the infinite possibilities of the cyberspace.
